BIOGRAPHY

Hervé is born in 1963 in Paris. He is graduated from photo national school Louis Lumière and from the university of arts Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs. He gets some financial supports to go to New-York where he meets photographers as Ralph Gibson, Cornell Capa and Enerstine Ruben. Fascinated by August Sanders, Irving Penn and Richard Avedon works, he devotes to portrait. In 1992, he becomes member of RAPHO agency, one of the most famous photography agency in Europe. He photographs people such as Zhang Yimou, Karl Lagerfeld, Claude Montana, John Galliano, Gianfranco Ferré, Olivier Lapidus, Christian Lacroix, Emmanuel Ungaro, Paco Rabane, Angelo Tarlazzi, Jean-Louis Sherrer, Madame Torrente… Arielle Dombasle, Jane Birkin, Frédéric Mitterrand, Bernard Henri Lévy… James Conlon, Nathalie Dessay, José Van Dam, Dawn Upshaw, Placido Domingo, Roberto Alagna, Michel Portal, Matub Lunes, Marcel Marceau, … Miquel Barcelo, Raymond Mason … Owen Johns, Paul Bocuse ….

Hervé Bruhat gained also his fame in the fashion and publicity world for the skillfull of his lightning, his grafic style and his ability in stage directing. He works on assignments like Olivier Lapidus Haute-Couture, Jacques Fath, Emmanuelle Khanh, Aubade, La Nuit des Publivores ….

Besides his commercial activities, the photographer likes to work on cultural photostories that he produces and organizes himself. From 1995 to 2000, Hervé travels in China, Japan, India, Indonesia and european countries to photograph the main masters of traditional theater. These portraits give birth to a 300 pages book Métamorphoses, de la vie à la scène (Romain Pages publisher). The book is selected by Mai du livre d’art 2004, the most important art book festival in France.

In 2002, Hervé Bruhat involves himself in the Chinese French cultural years. He works on several phototories in China and publishes two new books Pékin d’un siècle à l’autre and L’Ecole de l’opéra de Pékin (Romain Pages publisher). The project, Pékin d’un siècle à l’autre leads to a huge exhibition held in Paris official building. This exhibition is a partnership between Beijing Municipality, Paris Government, Albert-Kahn Museum and the photographer.


From 2004 to 2006, the photographer works on the road of chinese martial arts. Shi Yong Xin, the abbot of the famous Shaolin temple welcomes him in the monastery to make an exclusive photostory in order to present kung-fu and its connections with chinese medecine and buddhist culture. The project leads to an exhibition in China and a photobook in France, Shaolin, aux sources du zen et du kung-fu. Aubanel publisher, 2008.

Hervé Bruhat, who has jointly worked with Rapho agency for 13 years has regulary published his pictures in magazines such as : New-York Time, Times Magazine, The Guardian, News Week, Géo, Terre Sauvage, Figaro Madame, Libération, Marie-Claire China, Marie-Claire Japon, Télérama, Le Monde, Le Monde des Religions, L’Express, Le Nouvel Observateur, Le Nouveau cinéma, Challenges, Management, L’écho des Savanes, Institutionnal Investor, NZZ am Sontag, L’illustré, Viva, Le Point, The Independant…
